Skits

When I was about 8, I found out we were going to get a pet bunny. My parents showed us all a picture of three rabbits and said we were going to get the smallest one. We all argued about what to name him. Then, for some reason, we decided to name him Skits. When we came home, he was in a box with holes. He was black and white with some brown behind his ears. We still have him. His ears are so small, not like rabbits in picture books. His favourite treats are fruit and clover. He has a grass ball that he likes to attack. It’s so funny when he scratches and bites on it then, it moves, and he gets scared. He doesn’t like getting picked up, but if you stay still, he’ll climb up on you. One time, in the night, he went all the way upstairs and found my sister’s Barbie house. We didn’t even know he could climb stairs. Now he has to stay in his pen. It’s a very big pen, so big we can go in it to play with him. Sometimes he gets hyper and runs all around his pen super fast. These are some things about Skits.

Where I’m From

I’m from the smell of wax and cheery bright colours

while I bring my imaginary pictures to life.

From living in the pages

feeling their emotions as my own.

I am from the orange scarf sling

and the slippery branches of that crab apple tree.

From “Swiper no swiping!” and “I’m the map!”

Lessons with Oso and riding with Lucky.

I’m from gingerbread and shortbread.

From stockings and needles on the floor.

I am from a towering tree,

covered in stories

made from glass, plastic, and wood.

I’m from “16 days until Easter” and “41 days until Christmas”.

Opening doors on the best kind of calendar

until the best ever day.

I am from grammar rules,

scratching pencils,

wiping eraser dust.

I’m from re-reading, re-watching, re-playing, re-doing.

I am from nests in the porch.

From blue eggs,

hatching chicks.

From goodbye robins.

I am from the stained-glass windows,

and wooden pews with heavy books in the back.

From the surprising taste of communion.

My white dress.

I am from waiting, watching, wishing, wanting.

I am from sifting through catalogs,

circling every toy.

I’m from ABCDEFG,

a story told by the keys,

a secret language between Ms. Heather and me.

I am from watching the sky

for any sign of white.

From melting fluff on my tongue,

and my hands burning from cold.

I am from wet mittens,

and roaring fires.

I’m from helmets and seatbelts,

from “Don’t touch that!” and “Don’t eat those!”

From Elsa and Anna and Olaf the snowman,

from “let it go” and “for the first time in forever”.

From “it’s not fair!” and “what about her?!”

Basically my whole life was ruined sitting on those steps,

waiting for the timer to beep.

I am from birds chirping in the early morning,

and rain dripping over my head.

From biking in circles,

round and round.

From roasted marshmallows and glowsticks.

I am from water splashing,

delighted cries,

dripping wet in the summer sun.

I am from the soft sound of scratching blades,

and hitting the ice as my pick digs into the ground.

I’m from stories retold,

I follow along with my friends.

Just before bed.

I am from tiny clothes

so detailed they’re real,

and all the time spent playing with those they are for.

I am from open drawers,

from crackers and gummies

At sleepovers with Grandma.

I’m from fudge and cookies,

from Peter and Donna.

Weird gifts and swimming in the lake.

I’m from dark hair all around me,

and blue eyes.

I am from Skits,

so furry, black, and white.

I am from these moments,

these people,

this love.

Blacknose sheep

The Valice Blacknose sheep looks a lot like a stuffed animal. Some people think that they have been around since the fifteenth century, and other people think they have been in Valice, Scotland since pre-Roman times! But, because of human activity, the Blacknose sheep has now been an endangered species more than once. They are good for meat because of their size and sturdiness, and their wool is good for carpets. A lot of people consider them ‘the cutest sheep in the world’ and at first don’t know they are real or just knitted stuffies. What do you think? Pencil sharpeners

Have you ever broken a pencil and taken it to the pencil sharpener only to find it won’t work? This is something I hate. I have found that each pencil sharpener works differently. For example, a handheld sharpener works very differently than an electric one. These are the pencil sharpeners you may find in a classroom: cranking ones, electric ones, and handheld ones. Though the first two may be easier to use, the handheld ones often give the best results. Anyway, here are the ways I get the most out of all these sharpeners. The electric ones are simple. Just turn your pencil the way it is not trying to turn it. The cranking ones are more difficult. There is not one safe way to do it, because it depends on the sharpener. You will have to figure that out yourself. The handheld ones are easy. Just turn it. I hope this helps you be more effective when sharpening pencils.

Reviews

This is a review on reviews. I like reading reviews, especially the bad ones. They are really funny. One time my mom was looking for a bike, and she saw an adult tricycle. The reviews were funny, especially one. That one was done by an old lady. I forget what it said exactly, but I know at one part it said, “I have noticed it’s harder to go uphill, but that might just be me.” Another time I was reading a bad review I can’t remember what for, but it was titled stinky donkey fart. These are reasons why I like reading reviews.

Whales

One of my favourite animals is whales. In the summer, my family went on a trip to go whale watching. It was so cool! I loved it! We saw belugas, minkes and I think a few sperm whales. At one point a whale came right under the boat! It was so cool. We also saw seals, jellyfish, birds, and some other things, but that is a bit off topic. We didn’t see any blue whales or humpback whales, but that is really rare anyway. We went to a part of the saint Laurence River that has a lot of whales in it. That is because it has salt water in it. The reason it has salt water is because it is connected to the ocean. When the whales came up for air it was so cool. They would spray a lot of water in the air. Sometimes they flipped onto their bellies. I even saw a few baby belugas. They were gray even though their moms were white. I think whales are really cool. What I like to do in the snow

When it is winter, I like to go outside and play in the snow. I like to make snowmen, but I usually make the snowballs too heavy to lift, so I just leave them there. Sometimes I use them to make forts. I also like to go sledding. Our hill is not very big, but it is so steep that you go right into the field. I like to make snowballs (not for snowmen) to throw at my sisters. Sometimes I shovel snow off my porch to jump into. I also like to make snow piles to jump on from a swing, or off a climbing rope. When I come in, I usually drink hot cocoa and sit at the fire to warm up. What do you do like to do in the snow?

Favorite Holiday

What is your favourite holiday? Mine is Christmas, because I love getting people gifts and seeing their excited reaction when they open it. (I like getting gifts too). I also love our Christmas traditions because they bring our family lots of holiday joy. I could list about a hundred things I love about Christmas, but that is for a different post. This post is to ask you your favourite holiday. Please write your favourite holiday and one or two reasons why you like it in the comments. Thank you😊

A World Without Books

Can you imagen a world without books? Books are important because without books a lot of things we know would be lost. I bet you’re thinking, “oh I could just look it up on my phone.” Well actually no, you couldn’t, because we wouldn’t have phones. We wouldn’t have phones because without books, the first person to program a computer wouldn’t have had any way to record how to do it, so all that information would be lost. Also, many religions rely on books. Without books most religions wouldn’t have grown but died. We also would not be able to learn much in school, because nothing to learn could have been recorded. There would be no right way to spell, no math facts nothing. Sound like bliss? Where would we get our news if no one knew anything? We would be clueless. People talking to each other could only get us so far. Eventually it would end up like a huge telephone game. Now the next time a teacher asks you to read a book for school, don’t just groan, think “Imagen a world without books.”

Not too old for Halloween

When you reach a certain age, are you too old for Halloween? Or are you just too old to trick or treat? If you said yes to either of these questions, I disagree. Why? Because Halloween is not only for little kids. I mean, I don’t think you would say you’re too old for free candy. Or for scaring people. Or being scared yourself. Let’s face it, you can’t be too old for celebrating a holiday, or fun.
